Hollow Creek Greenway

Five Friday Ramblers walked the Hollow Creek Greenway. It's a 1.7 mile gem of a trail near Nixon Park tucked between Valley Rd, and Reynold's Mill Rd. down toward Loganville.

The idea for the foot trail was born about 25 years ago during development planning for that area. It was a dirt road slated to become a widened paved road but due to a few bright, forward thinking people on the planning commission, it became the first of a series of foot pathways planned for the Jacobus area. The second path has since been completed linking the Hollow Creek Greenway to a path around the Dallastown middle school.

Along the path you may notice a farm (house, barn and silo) that looks like an old farm. Surprise! It's an national, award winning sewage treatment plant that was designed by Dave Davidson to look like a Bucks County farmhouse.

An old friend to many of us but a newcomer to the Ramblers, Mary Barnes joined Fran Baumgartner, Janie McKnight, Marilyn Neuburger and myself for the delightful fall walk. Marilyn has a beautiful painting (which Mary painted) of the Greenway and it was so fun to have Mary point out the view in the painting!

Northwest Lancaster Rail Trail

October 21, 2016

Ten of us had a lovely walk on the Northwest Lancaster Rail Trail.  With looming rain and chill, we prepared for the worst, taking jackets and rain gear. Kate, dressed in short pants and T-Shirt, won the "best dressed" contest as it was hot and dry! We walked about 5 miles along the river, then drove over to McCleary's to enjoy lunch in their lovely back room.

Many of us will be away for the next walk and we discussed other alternatives, but we have decided to stay with our usual date, Friday, November 18 starting at 9:30 (we are switching to later starts now that winter is approaching

Leslie will host November. There's a great little hike called the Hollow Creek Trail in Jacobus that’s about a 4 mile hike near Nixon Park.

Carol will lead the December walk. We will repeat last year's walk along the York side of the river, ending with lunch at John Wright Restaurant.

Downtown York II

We had a great time walking through downtown York yesterday morning. We were greeted by Michele Baker from Salvation Army who gave us a tour of the many services they provide to the community, such as  food and rental assistance, summer program, after school program. We continued our walk to the historic Agricultural and Industrial Museum and then we proceeded to walk down the rail trail to Joan Fulton's beautiful apartment.
We ended our walk by having lunch at the Rockfish Public House.
I had such a great time!  Looking forward to our next walk.

John Rudy Park

We had a great walk at John Rudy Park this morning (August 19).  The weather was beautiful and saw great views of York city. We  stopped by a master garden and admired some stunning butterfly bushes.

The gardeners in the group particularly appreciated the work of the Penn State Master Gardeners. WOW!!  Not your average basil and tomato patch.
Six of us enjoyed a leisurely stroll thru Rudy.  Comfortable temps, low humidity and beautiful vistas.  Lisa orients us as patient Alice rests by her side.
Just what the heck is that??
A beautiful August morning in York Co.
Our next walk will be September 16 in the downtown area of York. We will meet at Salvation Army for a brief tour of their site as well as take a look at their art program. We will also visit the agricultural and industrial museum as well as walk by the rail trail down past  the York Academy and stop by Joan Fulton's neighborhood by the baseball stadium. We will also walk around some new establishments by George Street and plan to have lunch at Rockfish Public House.

In regards to our meeting time I am working on changing  to 9 AM rather than 9:30 AM. I will confirm the time a week before our walk. I am looking  forward to our next walk on September 16.

Nixon Park

Eleven of us gathered on this just right spring day to hike the trails in Nixon Park.  Thanks to Molly for organizing and sending out the reminder.  Our next ramble will be at Rocky Ridge Park on June 17.

Greenmount Cemetery

Seven of us gathered at the old Edgar Fahs Smith Jr. High on Texas Avenue in Kate's neighborhood.  She led us on a lovely walk up, down, and all around Greenmount Cemetery.  Janie brought her Swiss "daughter" Eliane, who had been an exchange student with their family 21 years ago.  We discussed places for the May walk, and decided that the trails in Nixon Park would be a good choice.  See you there on May 20th at 9:30.

Memorial Hospital Site

The March 18th ramble, led by Carol Stowell, was held at the future site of Memorial Hospital, located at 1605 Loucks Road, about 1 mile east of West Manchester Town Center.  Numerous paved paths in this former golf course gave many  options to make the walk longer or shorter distances.  We got there just in time, since apparently construction was scheduled to start the following Monday.

Hanover Trolley Trail

Seven hearty souls showed up on this chilly day for a brisk hour and a half walk in the Spring Grove countryside and  town.  Glad to be joined by our world traveling friend, Carol who will organize the March 18th outing.

This kind chap let us in to warm up, and took a group photo.

Regents' Glen Ramble

A dozen of us (some first timers!) gathered on this almost spring-like January day for a 2+ hour walk along the cart paths of Regents' Glen. We stopped at Box Hill to take in the view, and Diane Kearney gave us a brief history of the development of Regents' Glen and Box Hill. Joan Fulton agreed to plan the February walk.  If the weather is "iffy" she'll send out an email. We agreed that a little rain is nice to walk in, but downpours and snow storms might call for reconsideration.
